There’s a Winner in All of Us-Part 4 of 5

Wheels Up, Wheels Down, Wheels Off

Once again airport travel was an experience to remember. While walking through the Atlanta Airport, I was about to get over losing my neck pillow and the lens falling out of my new pair of glasses, when the airport delivered my ballistic nylon, indestructible roller bag with not only a missing wheel, but the entire wheel housing gone.

During March we have been talking about the qualities of a winner, but I confess that I was so self-focused with negative things happening to me, that I almost forgot I was a winner.

Looking Beyond Yourself

While I waited in line to go through security to catch the next flight, a fragile, silver-haired woman in front of me slowly shuffled bags back and forth across the conveyor belt. She didn’t notice she was holding up a long line of impatient travelers backed up behind me. She was trying to handle her bags while helping a blind man in his late 30’s in front of her. He must have been a close relative the way she hovered over him.

I stood there for a short time staring at her, watching her helpless motions, until I could stand it no longer.

“May I help you?” I asked.

Her brow wrinkled as she spilled out her concern that they were going to miss their flight.

It flashed across my mind that no one else noticed her needs, so I quickly grabbed her bags and ran them through the line like a pro-handler. In seconds she was on her way. It jarred me back into my “winner’s circle “. When you have your heart and mind set on being a winner, that winning spirit pops up at unexpected times. It becomes a part of your actions.

On My Way Again

My flight took off and landed, and I was on my way to the hotel. My focus had turned so far off myself at that point that I hardly noticed the burly, woman cab driver with missing teeth and tattoos that started at the wrists and went all the way up to her elbows. I reluctantly withheld saying much to her, but one word out of my mouth and she talked as hard and fast as she could to unload her opinions. It didn’t matter. A potentially negative experience faded in my mind as I thought about the old lady and how I had made her life a bit more tolerable for a brief moment in time.

You Are a Winner

Life is all about how you look at it. When you look beyond yourself, you have new perspective and naturally set yourself up for success.

Remember to go back and read from my March series, There’s a Winner in All of Us. Each part builds on itself to help you develop a winning spirit. Start with Part 1, What it Takes to be a Winner, Part 2, A Winning Attitude, Part 3, Position Yourself As a Winner. And, next week is our final week, Part 5, Know When to Walk Away.

Many people overlook how a winning spirit operates. Gandhi captured it in a thought, “One man cannot do right in one department of life whilst he is occupied in doing wrong in another department. Life is one indivisible whole.”

Winning is not a part-time job. As it becomes incorporated into your life, mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally, even in the midst of difficult situations like getting breast cancer or just trying to live your daily life by catching a plane or going to work, create your own personal “winner’s circle”. Let that winning spirit be in the core of your being and you will find happiness.

Thought for Today:

“A winner is big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.”–John Maxwell
