Through the Eyes of a Child

A Four-Year Old’s View of God

The age of four is a curious time in children’s lives. They explore new ideas and concepts. Our granddaughter, Ellie, had been learning important values at an early age. Her parents taught her that God loved her, and she seemed to understand. Then they introduced the concept of God’s mercy. Her mother carefully explained it over and over, hoping she grasped such a complex thought.

Days before her fourth birthday, we gathered our family together for a dinner at our home. Ellie sat at the table among all adults. She was not having one of her best days, so she started exploring her boundaries. Her mother had told her several times to behave, but she wasn’t paying attention. Then the final warning was issued, “Ellie, if you misbehave one more time, you are in serious trouble.”

Everyone at the table got silent and cut our eyes over to Ellie to see what she would do. She couldn’t resist one more testing of her mother’s patience and had her finale act-up.

“Alright, Ellie,” said her mother, “That’s it. I warned you.”

We held our breaths for a second as the table went silent. We hoped Ellie would not have to go to the “other room”. As her mother got up from her chair, she said, “Come on, Ellie, right now.”

Ellie’s dark brown hair swayed back and forth as she scanned the table with her chocolate eyes, searching for someone to rescue her, but we were all out-ranked. Ellie, in her moment of desperation said, “How about showing me a little mercy?” We tried not to laugh out loud, but we all knew she got the concept.

Where Is God When I Need Him?

Do you feel that you need God’s mercy, but can’t quite grasp the concept? It’s not as difficult to understand as we try to make it. You may be going through breast cancer. You may not understand why you are having tough times. Start with this concept:

  1. God loves you and offers His help in many ways.

Sometimes we reject His love by trying to do everything ourselves. Or, we think we aren’t worthy of His magnificent love. But, He is a real spiritual being who has endured the ends of time and has already proven His great love to us, unlike false gods who are nothing but symbols.

  2. Take one step toward Him.

How? Pray in your heart for His help.

  3. Accept His love and forgiveness.

He will reveal His kindness, gentleness, and mercy, to name only a few of His attributes. Follow the love trail that He offers. It leads you to a life of happiness and fulfillment. People will step into your life and extend a helping hand in unexpected ways. And, circumstances will start to change for the better.

Thought for Today:

“For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”

Psalm 103:11,12-The Bible
